A

Alloy

In metallurgy, a substance of two or more combined elements, one or more which is metal.

Anneal

To soften by means of of heat treatment.

B

Beading

A rigid tube preparation in which a bead or radial bump is formed around the end of a tube in preparation for connection to a flexible hose via hose clamp.

Bullet

A wood, plastic, or metal bearing or slug that is drawn by a cable through a rigid tube in order to correct a dent.

Buna-N

A synthetic rubber variation used to produce flexible hoses that are compatible with petroleum product, but not with phosphate ester based products.

Butyl

A synthetic rubber variation used to produce flexible hoses that are compatible with phosphate ester products, but are not to be used with petroleum products.

C

CRES

An engineering acronym that means corrosion resistant stainless steel.

Chafing

Damage caused to a flexible tube or rigid line over time, resulting from the presence of vibration while in physical contact with an adjacent structure or fluid lines.

Clearance

Flexible hose assemblies must not contact other fluid lines, equipment, and structures in order to avoid chafing and damage.

Cold Flow

A permanent impression made in a flexible hose material caused by the pressure of a hose clamp on the synthetic rubber.

Complacency

A false sense of confidence in the performance of a routine task that can lead to risky behavior.

Cryofit

A type of permanent tube fitting connection which utilizes a fitting made of Tinel™, which expands when frozen and contracts when thawed, in which the frozen fitting is placed on to the end or ends of a tube and then thawed, effectively clamping the fitting around the tube end as it contracts to form a permanent metal-to-metal seal.

D

Dash Number

A decal printed to the outside of flexible hose material that identifies the hose size, manufacturer, manufacturing quarter and year.

Deburr

The process of removing attached metal shaving from the end of freshly cut rigid tube.

E

F

FLAM

A required tag for any lines carrying flammable products.

Flattening

An undesirable side-effect produced by bending a rigid tube improperly in which the tube’s diameter on one axis (usually 90 degrees from the bend axis) is reduced. Flattening increases a tube’s likelihood of fatigue and failure.

Flex

Extra flexible hose length given to flexible hose assemblies attached to moving equipment in order to allow the hose to move with the equipment without putting stress on the hose in both normal and flexed positions.

Flexible Fluid Hose

Any variation of flexible metal tubing made from either some variation of synthetic rubber with or without supporting fabric or metal braided sheath; is used for conveying or holding fluid for the various systems contained within an airplane.

Flexible Fluid Line (Flexible Hose)

A flexible plumbing line used in place of rigid tubing in areas subject to movement or considerable vibration.

Foreign Object Damage (FOD)

Any object that does not belong in, on, or near an airplane that results in possible damage or injury to personnel, airplanes, or airplane equipment.

H

Hose Assembly

A flexible hose complete with proper fittings installed on both ends.

Hose Clamps

Any variation of a clamp that is used to either securely connect a flexible hose end to a rigid tube or fitting or to attach and support long runs of flexible hose to the airframe.

Human Factors

Behaviors that effect performance in the workplace.

I

ID – Inner Diameter

The diameter of a tube or hose, measuring across from inner edge to inner edge. This gives the width of the inside of the hose or tube.

L

Lack of Knowledge

The lack of pertinent information necessary to perform a task successfully and safely.

Lay Line

A decal printed onto the outside of a flexible hose that runs the length of the hose and indicates the natural straight (untwisted) position of the hose.

Longitudinal Crack

A tube failure that has resulted in crack or opening along the length of a rigid tube.

M

Machine Threads

A common style of bolt and nut threading which have parallel threading that do not create any form of seal without the aid of washers or sealants.

N

Neoprene

A synthetic rubber variation used to produce flexible hoses that are resistant to petroleum products. It is more resistant to abrasions, but is not resistant to phosphate ester based products.

O

OD – Outer Diameter

the diameter of a tube or hose, measuring across from outer edge to outer edge. This gives the overall width of the hose or tube itself.

P

PHDAN

A required tag for any lines carrying physically damaging products.

PSI

An acronym that means pounds per square inch which is used to ?? that the pressure is relative to a vacuum rather than the ambient atmospheric pressure.

Permalite®

a class of fluid line fittings that are permanently installed onto the end of a fluid line by the use of axial swaging, in which mechanical pressure is applied in a single direction (usually parallel to the tube itself) which slides a compression ring down the fittings body sleeve. The compression ring causes the sleeve to compress around the tube, forming a metal-to-metal seal.

Permaswage®

a class of fluid line fittings that are permanently installed onto the end of a fluid line by the use of radial swaging, in which mechanical pressure is applied around the circumference of the fitting, effectively reducing its diameter and forming a metal-to-metal seal around the end of the fluid line.

Pinhole Crack

A failure in a rigid tube that resulted in an opening along the side spanning less than 0.3 inches in length along the tube.

Pipe Thread

A common style of bolt and nut threading in which the tapered threading itself creates a metal-to-metal seal without the aid of washers or sealant.

Preset

A rigid tube end preparation for flareless fittings in which a metal compression sleeve is permanently affixed to the end of a rigid tube prior to installation. This process is done separately in order to verify proper installation of the compression sleeve before installation into the aircraft.

Proof Test

The process of pressure testing a newly fabricated hose assembly prior to putting the assembly into production.

R

Rigid Fluid Line (Rigid Tubing)

Any variation of stiff metal tubing made from either aluminum alloys, corrosion resistant steel, or titanium that is used for conveying or holding fluid for the various systems contained within an airplane.

S

Slack

Extra flexible hose length provided to a hose assembly in order allow the installed hose to expand and contract due to pressure and temperature changes.

Swage

a process for shaping or forming metal by mechanical pressure.

T

TOXIC

A required tag for any lines carrying toxic products.

Tagging

Placing of labels, decals, paint, or metal tags on fluid lines to indicate the product contained within the line.

Teflon™

A product produced by DuPont that can be used to form flexible hoses that posses great compatibility with all fluid products commonly used within aviation; also provides little resistance for even sticky or viscous products.

Torque

A measurable force of rotation applied to nuts and bolts to tighten or loosen the nut or bolt.

Tubing

Rigid, hollow, elongated cylindrical piece of material through which fluids pass.

Twist

Undesirable rotation of the flexible tube itself during installation which reduces the hose’s rupture threshold and can loosen attaching nuts. Presence of twist is indicated by examining the lay lines.
